Help with next steps (terrible recruiting agency)

Recently I interviewed for a summer role at a large balance sheet bank.

The interviews with the employees were very good and a day after I got a call from the recruitment agency in charge saying they were impressed and they will interview one more candidate. If that person does well they will interview us both again, if not I just get the offer straight. Fast forward a week I get flatout rejected with no reason.

Either a. there is nepo involved, b. the other candidate is a S+ tier person, except they would probably be at a better bank if they were.

Regardless, should I reach out to the recruitment agency asking for feedback? Or one of the people who interviewed me from the bank, with whom I connected really well.

Yeah I’d definitely reach out to the recruiter first. The whole “they were impressed” then random rejection a week later usually means something changed behind the scenes, not that you suddenly became a bad candidate. Could be another person, could be internal politics, could be some MD wanting a different profile, could literally be headcount changing. Unfortunate truth but recruiting is messy like that. Just send a quick note asking if they have any feedback and saying you appreciated the process. Worst case they ignore it, best case you get something useful.
