LA is a sweatshop, HLHZ Restructuring is tops. But you knew that already.
Do NY M&A. You won't suffer from small penis syndrome if you do M&A in NY.

Anyone have any insight as to which is more active? I'm interested to their FAS group in particular but any general insight would be helpful.
Don't know about FAS in particular, but for Restructuring:
1) Have heard LA Restructuring is a sweatshop but load may have been lessened in last 6-9 months given rosier business picture (that said, HL/Laz/other restr. are always busy).
2) Met some people from NY Restructuring and all seemed pretty chill.
3) Their heavy hitters are based in LA and I know their bigger deals over the last little while were run out of the LA office.
FWIW, I know that HL's FAS has been top 1 or 2 in fairness opinions the last few years (or some similar statistic). Also, when there are some complex assets or liabilities to be valued FAS is brought in (recent acq of Red Pine boosted that biz).
