Holiday break made me realize I hate banking
I had a light week last week and this week had been busy and the break made me realize how much I hate banking. I’m 6 months into the job but honestly not sure if I’ll finish 2 years. I wanted to do IB -> PE -> HF but now I want to do something entrepreneurial. Did anyone go through something similar?

if you hate it so much do one year and leave
I think I’m just not fulfilled. I know the job would be rough but nothing I did has been interesting and I already know how to model from doing a lot of courses and models on my own time so haven’t sharpened my technical skills
that's understandable. keep in mind you may get staffed on more interesting things going forward and more importantly, 6 more months on the job isn't that much in the grand scheme of things and having at least 1 year of experience will be a lot more respectable to future employers (or investors if your an entrepreneur) than 6 months.
Curious why you initially wanted to go pe to hf if you know your end goal was hf? Why not go from banking
Wanted SM and most of them either require top top top banking groups or private equity
Yep. I actually ended up quitting to pursue something entrepreneurial. Been enjoying unemployment a little more than working on the idea but glad to be taking a breather, for now, either way.
If you're not sure about quitting to try something of your own just yet, there's a headhunting firm out there that focuses on placing bankers and consultants in near startup roles. The firm is called Opus Search.
You can almost always come back to banking, barring some embarrassing exit that you'd have to be the cause of or a shitshow economic downturn like in 2008.
First big vacation is always really tough, since you get a taste of what life was like pre-banking. I’d see how you settle back in, then reassess in a month or two.
I’d stay for bonus in February either way but is it better in the office? I think not seeing anyone for 6 months has made it feel like a prison
It’s a mixed bag. You’ll have face time (not the Apple version), have to get dressed, and less flexibility with your time. But you’ll also get to enjoy the bullpen atmosphere and BS, plus in my opinion work is more collaborative and less stressful when you’re there with your bosses.
Oh man I can related to this perfectly. I've been looking for exits since early December but after the few days I got off, I do not want to go back at all. Way too much stupid bullshit you need to put up with.
You're lucky you have a February bonus - mines much further out in the year. At this point, I'm willing to forfeit it...
