Holy shit this job is difficult
First year analyst in group with terrible culture / work practices. I knew what I was getting into but damn, living through it is another story. Clarifying that I’m not referencing the actual technical aspect- just the inhumane expectations and demands. It’s relentless.
S/o to fellow newly minted banker bois
curious whether this is a BB or EB experience
Yes, a good/bad culture makes all the difference in the world, as someone who's been in very good and very bad ones.
Couldn’t agree more.
Am only a second year but have seen my group’s culture devolve from very good to very bad, and it’s absolutely miserable. When I joined we had great seniors, we’re doing great work, and were working hard but not having our souls crushed. Since then a bunch of our best seniors dipped meaning our group had to fill all those spots quickly, without properly searching for people who would fit the culture. All these new senior bankers have been making work absolutely miserable, with no respect for group/firm practices around weekend work, late nights on dumbass pitches, etc.
It’s fucking awful.
That's tough. If there is anyone decent left, you could try to work more exclusivly for them. Easier said then done but it can happen. Obvisouly it depends on group size and how staffing works for your team.
GS?
When you reach that point, just Ray Dalio your superior and go start a hedge fund.
If only it were that easy
What exactly are you grinding on? Are these deals/pitches?
Hey man can relate. Joined and started acting nice to everyone just to get shit on because I’m a first year. It’s funny that the shittiest people have only been doing banking for a couple of years. Wish you the best man, unfortunately everyone out there ain’t nice.
Feel the same way. Have heard numerous times from a senior analyst in my group that we don't "get paid to be nice."
This is so cringe, I'm actually embarrassed for your senior analyst. Might want to remind them we are in the relationship business, not the financial modeling business.
Yeah this job is no joke. Thought I could go A2A, maybe not.
Would you mind to elaborate brother?
The senior banker job is amazing. Meet with clients, discuss strategy, lead industry defining transactions.
The junior banker job is let’s make this page, and this analysis, and this logo page, etc. The job itself isn’t that hard, it’s the expectation to be available all of the time. The disrespect and toxicity are what make this job so bad. The worst part is that your associates and VPs are working right along you.. so don’t expect to move up one level and suddenly sleep at 10pm.
Same after the first month I knew I couldn’t do A2A.
Dude I’m experiencing the same shit but between different MD’s culture / style. Two are completely reasonable but the third has me up all night and regularly sends comments after 1am. Definitely more difficult full time than I expected
Genuinely question, if once you get more senior your WLB should improve, what’s he doing up at 1?
some people just love the grind and will be up late even if they don't have to
He's just always online, no idea
