How are Indians perceived in Banking? Are they well respected?

I am an Indian male dreaming from wall street investment banking. I have great GPA and am the speaker of the finance club at my Uni. I think Investment Banking is one of the most prestigious job one could have and it is really interesting to me to read all of your posts, so thank you for that very much. My question is now, how Indians are perceived in the banking world. Can I do something to change the perception of myself? What do you guys see in Indians? What skills should I especially emphasize? I am very quant heavy and would say that I am in the best 1% of my school.

Indians are perceived like anyone else, there are plenty on the street

Saying you're the best 1% at your school is cringe though. Any negative perception would be from the way you're presenting yourself, not from being Indian

take it easy guys - a lot of people from that part of the world aren't endowed with Western social graces and are insecure about how they'll fit in. To the OP - finance is a very results-focused industry. If you're Indian and a strong performer that can make the bank a lot of money, your background means nothing. To the extent that you don't fit in or show any progress towards doing so, that will be a detriment towards you getting in and succeeding at a job. Immerse yourself in the culture, learn from your mistakes, but at no point be apologetic about your background.

Well most of the other races are heavily under represented in IB and quant skills get Indians there. What about higher positions (VP, MD and stuff)

 

They are considered good busy-bodies

however i have always noticed you dont see many of them at Director, MD positions eventhough they are overrepresented in the Analysts and perhaps associate classes.

I think they arent good salespeople cuz indian and pakistani and other brown people from that part generally arent loud talkers and are too humble

indians smell a lot too and i guess that holds them back (added for #trollvalue)

 

I am an Indian in uni who has the same question. While I agree with the idea behind the question, I don’t particularly like the way it’s framed. Your university might help you get into a good IB but growth depends on your performance there. Asians are perceived as being great quants and math wizards. But IB is a bit more, you need to be able to sell things to clients - that requires learning softs really quickly, being good salespeople, taking initiative, being confident. You’d have to work more than the average white associate to stand out, but that would have prepped you better for that role in my opinion.

 

what is this ridiculousness. regardless of the answer, this shouldn’t stop you from pursuing what you want to do, so I don’t see how effective having this conversation even is. It’s obvious the best thing you could be is a straight white male to get into the senior banker ranks but simple google searches will show Indians are at high levels god damn everywhere. The Goldman Pre-IPO partner list had like 10 Indians in it, and that’s back when shit was hella racist. you’ve got DJ Deb, Victor Khosla, Sanjay Patel, lots more super senior investment professionals that I can’t be bothered to name right now. I think there’s gonna be some slants yes but it’s gotten to the point almost (especially on the buyside a bit more) where your career trajectory is about you and not your Indianness
