Instead of an internship where you are there for the summer, an externship is usually a 3 day to week long program designed to introduce prospective summer interns to the world of financial services.

A few investment banks including Credit Suisse and UBS run such programs for rising juniors.

 

Sounds a bit like the spring weeks that are run here in London for 1st year students. I doubt they're of any real use, but if anything attending one would demonstrate your interest in the industry. It can't hurt.

Agreed, it will show an interest in the industry but nothing else real substantive is provided from it. I guess a good equivalent to what it's worth is being part of the school investment club.
