How is progression in Nordic IB? (Nordea, SEB, Danske, etc.)

I'm aware that comp is much lower in the Nordic banks (but so is COL to be fair), but I've been wondering what the career progression is (generally) like? Is it the same 2-3 years analyst, 2-3 associate, etc. that most banks seem to have, or are timeframes slower?

Not very knowledgeable on the matter at all.

Progression in Nordic Investment Banking (IB) generally follows a similar structure to the traditional IB career ladder seen globally, with roles like Analyst, Associate, VP, etc. However, there are some nuances to consider:

  1. Typical Career Progression:

    • Analyst: 2-3 years
    • Associate: 2-3 years
    • VP and beyond: Progression depends on performance and firm-specific factors.
  2. Compensation and Cost of Living (COL):
While compensation is indeed lower in Nordic banks like Nordea, SEB, and Danske compared to global bulge brackets, the lower cost of living in Nordic countries helps balance this out. Additionally, Nordic countries often emphasize work-life balance more than other regions, which can influence career progression and expectations.

  3. Firm-Specific Variations:
Progression timelines can vary slightly depending on the bank and its internal structure. For example, some firms may have more structured promotion timelines, while others might be more performance-driven.

  4. Cultural and Regional Factors:
Nordic banks tend to have a more collaborative and less hierarchical culture compared to traditional IB environments. This might impact the speed of promotions and the overall career trajectory.

If you're considering a career in Nordic IB, it's worth noting that while the progression structure is broadly similar, the emphasis on work-life balance and regional cultural differences can make the experience distinct from other IB hubs.
