have cold called/cold emailed, the firm has asked you to send them your resume, only to follow-up 2 weeks later and they said they have already hired a summer student?
What the hell can you do in that case? It seems like they didn't even look at my interview and disregarded my application and totally forgot about me =(.

some offices it's all about connections. i'd even say more so for boutiques because (1) junior requirements are low (2) some don't even have HR departments, so it's by connections.
it probably just means someone's friend's girlfriend's brother wants an internship (and will probably not even do IB anyway) and some analyst/assoc decided they would give it to him/her instead of you. it usually doesn't mean anything about you usually so don't take it personally.
