How much do connections actually help?

I recently have made a lot of reliable connections recently with some big(ish) fish whose words hold a good amount of weight when it comes to the world of banking. How much does this actually help when it comes to getting interviews/offers, is it really as helpful as people say, or is it mostly overhyped?

Yes because all of those connections have influence on the new hires. Especially if they’re in the analyst/associate hiring. Plus it makes it look like you’ve spent time researching and getting to know the firm. When someone else references a candidate they know or like they’re immediately brought to the top of the list. This has been my experience.

All things being equal, the firm will go with someone they know over someone they don't. I don't know a single person from my faculty who got a job through applying on the website. Everyone who managed to land jobs in finance did it through established connections, or building connections through networking.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying that you'd be shooting yourself in the foot by not attempting to build connections at the firm you're applying to.
