I have an interest in a career in underwriting but I have heard that there is a lot of travel that goes on with it. How much travel is there because I hate flying and traveling unless it’s vacation.

These roles are called Risk at large banks and you would not travel at all
Traditional lender underwriting at a local bank for loans/asset financing - you would travel quite a bit to see the assets in person
So large banks doesn’t need traveling but smaller regional ones do? Why is that?
Well if you're working at like a Citi or Chase branch doing loan financing you will travel (very locally)
The "risk" job is technically not underwriting but is the large, corporate, NYC version of that - for example you'll evaluate credit risk of extending a loan to a company or market risk of certain security positions - you are looking at similar things just offering an alternative if you like evaluating assets and risk but do not want to travel
