How tf do i control a stutter?
I've grown up with a stutter since I was kid. It went away after I started middle school and I thought that was the end of it, but coming to college, it's been back on full blast. I don't know if it's because my teeth shifted after I got my wisdom teeth out, but I literally cannot say certain words especially under pressure. It's severely hindering my recruiting and coffee chatting with people thinking I'm awkward just because I have to force out everything I want to say. Every coffee chat has literally been a gamble / trial by fire as to what my fluency will be. What's even more funny is I used to be an incredibly competitive debater/deca student with numerous placements nationally. Anyone who's gotten over this please help.
Embrace it and disclose it in your chats or interviews. People will understand that it is something you can’t control. From my perspective, it’d be very impressive for someone to thrive in the face of a challenge like that.
I have met many people in finance with stutters or other speech impediments. There’s a partner at Sequoia (Andrew Reed) who has a stutter - even our last President had one :). Hope things go well for you.
Yeah I face the same problem but not as bad. If it doesn't happen when you're talking to your friends/family, then you definitely know its a pressure/anxiety related problem, which can probably be fixed. My buddy used to have an issue with public speaking so he would pop a beta blocker before big presentations at work (though surely there is some kind of consequence/side effect to use a drug for public speaking).
For coffee chats though what can help is just getting comfortable with doing them, so try to get in a lot of reps. having some preplanned questions can help, as it gives the conversation more structure and avoids less awkward silences.
if anyone else has some more concrete solutions please share
Tell them beforehand, they will appreciate the honesty and bravery. And if you want to fix it, try to talk slower and enunciate each word. It takes practice but it works. Source: A Former Stutterer
