how to ask MD & VP to connect with BB bankers

Junior at a non target currently interning at a small GE / VC fund part time in school and the VP and Founder of the Fund I work with have prior IB and HF background with MFs and BBs like GS,MS, JPM.

I have a great relationship with those guys and they know I wanna break in IB but I am confused how to ask for intros without sounding weird or something, been 3 months with them working but need your help monkeys - I feel socially awkward to ask them with intros and not even sure if they know bankers considering they were in IB back in ‘10 lol.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach this:

  1. Frame it as seeking advice, not just intros: Start by expressing your gratitude for their mentorship and guidance so far. Then, mention that you're exploring ways to break into IB and would value their advice on how to best position yourself.

  2. Be specific but not pushy: Instead of directly asking for introductions, you can say something like, "I know you have a strong background in IB, and I was wondering if you might have any advice or insights on how I could connect with professionals in the industry to learn more about their experiences."

  3. Let them offer the intro: Often, if they feel comfortable and know someone relevant, they'll naturally offer to connect you. For example, they might say, "I know someone at GS who might be helpful."

  4. Be mindful of timing: Since you've been working with them for three months, it’s a good time to bring this up. However, ensure the conversation feels natural and not transactional.

  5. Follow up professionally: If they do offer to connect you, make sure to follow up promptly and professionally. When reaching out to the banker, mention the VP/Founder’s name to establish credibility.

Remember, the key is to make it about learning and advice rather than just asking for favors. This approach will make you come across as genuine and thoughtful.
