A Finance related degree would be best suited. Advisory requires basic financial knowledge (compared to other branches of IB) but knowing and understanding the technical aspects could help in the job. He doesn't need to take all the advanced courses, but if he enjoys them, it would greatly help!

Solidarity is (perhaps unfortunately) right. However, there is much opportunity in South Africa if you have a BBusSci, BCom (Hons) or a CA / CFA CA (SA) is most useful, Master's helps a bit but not much unless it is an MBA/MFE from a proper school
