How to not black out and have fun in NYC

Preface: in college i would black out most times i would drink each weekend and that was my source of fun - i lack self control when i start drinking lol

As my first real weekend doing IB, im realizing I have to be functional on Sunday morning. How do i have fun and not black out? Any less drinking heavy night things to do?

I had the same issue as you, once I started drinking, I couldn't stop.

My solution was to go sober for a month to prove to myself I didn't need to drink to have fun. I'd still go out with my friends to bars and such, but not drink. At first it sucked, but I started to really enjoy just being present in the moment. It helped me realize that I was using alcohol to numb myself, and I wasn't even enjoying my nights out while drinking because I couldn't remember them. One month turned into two, then three, etc. I went a full 8 months before having another drink.

Now when I drink, I tend to drink hard liquor and water. The liquor tastes awful so that helps me slow down, and the water keeps me semi-hydrated so the hangover isn't bad, if there is one at all.

The move is to smoke a little weed during the pregame and then start drinking afterwards. That way the alcohol overrides the "antisocial" effects of the weed but you don't need to drink as much to get to the same level of fucked up. It's like the equity cushion in an LBO. Figure out how much you can drink without being violently hungover (max leverage), set a goal for how sauced you wanna get (total capitalization), then plug the difference with weed. If you're feeling bold you can even do a bolt-on acquisition (coke) or a dividend recap (ketamine). Fr tho I been doing this strat for years and barely ever get hangovers, everything in life is abt optimizing risk vs return

In HS: “I will never touch drugs!”

As an adult: “hmm. This seems like an interesting Quad mind fuck concoction to try”

If you really can't control yourself (and to me this is a foreign concept cos??? Just don't drink more? But whatever) then everyone telling you to stop drinking completely is absolutely correct.

I have a buddy who was similar. Couldn't stop drinking once he started. Every night would end with him being kicked out. Then he got almost seriously injured because of it. He stopped drinking for 6 months after that. Went to all social events completely sober. Was weird at first but realised he doesn't need to drink to have fun. He's now sober out of choice but has the occasional drinking session and no longer goes overboard. I'd think about a similar path.

A few solutions for you:

  1. You can’t go hard on Saturday’s. Sorry man, it’s the price of the job. When you have a really stressful role, you can’t drink like others. Once I left IB I was able to drink hard on saturdays again, but during you really can’t without killing your week. My personal decision was to end nights early on Saturday’s and go out fridays. If you are going out on Saturday’s:
  2. Have a cutoff time for drinks. Nothing alcoholic down the hatch post 11pm will do wonders for you. You still should have a buzz, but by the time 1am rolls around you should be -3 whatever your 11pm drunkness was. Again, this isn’t ideal, but for me it was necessary to not have sundays where I completely lost my shit from anxiety and being overwhelmed (also saying this as someone who sober has 0 anxiety or overwhelmed feelings)
  3. Bounce after the pregame/ avoid the last bar. Being realistic, nothing ever happens at the last bar of the night. Be smart and if everyone is changing locations post midnight, it’s time to dip.
