How to plan for Full Time recruiting?

Unfortunately I didn't get any offers for a SA 2023 role in IB. I got an offer as on the private funds/placement agent team at a EB, but this doesn't really have the exit opps I would be hoping for, so trying to keep my options open regarding FT recruitment. I have a few questions - would appreciate help with any or all of them.

  1. I was wondering how badly this is gonna be affected given market conditions? Would any banks shut down FT recruitment entirely?

  2. Also, not sure on the timeline - when do applications open, and is the timeline mostly the same going forward from there?

  3. When is a good time to start networking/letting contacts know of my position? I kinda messed up and didn't stay in touch with most of the people I networked with for SA 2023 roles - would it be a good idea to reach out to them? Or should I try find new people to network with?

  4. How to best grow from the lack of success last year? I didn't even get anything past a HireVue for most locations, despite what I thought was a strong resume. 3.9+ GPA, sophomore fall internship at a boutique IB, and spring/summer internship at a PE fund of funds. Is it possible that this latter one has boxed me in quite early?

Thanks for any help!

Typically you send them a message before you apply asking for their input on best way to position yourself for an interview or ask straight up for a person in HR. We’re you not doing anything like that? (Not trying to sound condescending, trying to learn) thanks!

  1. There might be hiring freezes still, but if you are proactive enough and have a good profile (you do), there will be random spots.
  2. I recently wrote a post about re-recruiting here which probably mostly covers points 2 and 3. Definitely re-reach out to people you talked to - I had one in particular who even was nice enough to give actual feedback from the previous year's process.
  3. As I mentioned in the other thread, around mid-way through your internship or early/mid July is prob best.
  4. I also struggled with HireVue during SA recruitment so I empathize. Unfortunately, I think it's becoming more popular so you might encounter it for FT, but the processes are typically more ad hoc and less HR heavy in my experience. There's not much for HV other than just nailing the basic behavioral stuff. Write it verbatim or in note form, record yourself, get feedback from friends/mentors. It's fucking stupid and I never did stuff like that because I hated it, but I probably would have done better for doing that. Also, this is just my experience and observations of my semi-target school's alum network, HireVue seems like a contraindicator of success. For a more traditional boutique-y networking process, I could grind and show I was interested and interesting. Doing that in a canned setting is way harder and many of the HireVue type firms will be closer to formal by-school quotas than not. Also, I doubt FoF boxed you in necessarily, but would perhaps emphasize the IB internship and your PFG junior summer more going forward

This is crazy helpful - thank you so much. I guess it was just difficult to identify what specifically held me back, with my profile and coming from a target/semi target, but I guess it must just be my performance in the HV. To clarify, are you saying to start reaching out to others mid-way through the internship or mid/early July? Or is that when recruiting usually begins?

Your post on the other thread was very well written and clear btw, so thanks again!

Yeah, I think a big thing to take away is get as much feedback from others as possible. Having a high GPA, decent to good experience along with strong technicals can trick you into thinking you are set when the other half of the interview is way more important (I speak from experience here as well). Self-awareness and peer feedback are probably more crucial and it seems like you have the former so seek out the latter.

As for timing, it's not required to start that early, but as I mentioned in the other thread, having recent correspondence with someone helps. By the time you get your return offer, you are just following up on an already warm connection instead of starting from scratch.
