How to Succeed in SA Group Placement?

How do you go about getting one of the better groups in SA placement? I'm a non target interning at a BB this summer. Do I have a chance at landing a top group, or will my non target status hold me back? Would be super helpful to hear from people who were in a previous position similar to mine. I understand networking is important obviously. Are there any hidden secrets in the placement process? Some people say it's based on whether they know you and also the strength of your resume compared to others in the class. Thanks in advance

I agree bro. I don't care that I'm non target. It's never made me feel less or anything like that. What I was asking is whether it affected how the decision makers chose interns for groups. Like maybe targets have more alumni in groups, which helps them get selected for top ones etc. Just wanted to know whether non targets were able to land top groups at their banks

Know the industry you want cold. Be able to talk about what's going on, recent deals, trends, etc. Try to keep convos focused on the industry and group rather than general questions that any analyst in any group could answer.

Network aggressively. Make sure you have really good questions that are specific to the space. i.e. asking "I saw your bank recently did the XYZ deal, how did this compare to Competitor's ABC deal?" instead of "So what's a day in the life look like?"
