How to use Google and LinkedIn to Find Alumni
I attend a massive non-target so it's been a pain searching for alumni, this is something I recently discovered on my own and I thought I should share it, forgive me if it has already been posted.
As some of you may know, Google provides multiple ways of narrowing a search. I make use of two of them with this method, :site and " ". :site Conducts the search solely within the site specified. " " Whatever is placed in quotations is searched for exactly as it is typed. An example of what you could type in the search bar is
site:www,wallstreetoasis,com "apples and bananas"
It would churn out the urls to the pages on WSO where apples and bananas is written.
Knowing this you can try finding alumni and also specify jobs
site:www, linkedin, com "nontarget university" "investment banking" "managing director"
On LinkedIn, I type in "[My University] Investment banking" and get hundreds of bankers, HF, PE, and VC alumni.
If you aren't having any luck with that, chances are you don't have any alumni in banking. Good tip though.
I wouldn't type in "investment banking" in the search field, with or without anything.
Just type in your school name. From there, what I personally do, is filter by location and then either company (if you want all employees at a company) or industry (if you want only the bankers at all companies).
That has given me the best results and usually leaves no stone unturned.
Great tip, thanks!
Would've posted this earlier but spam filter was being horrible. Have something really important I wanted to add. For Linkedin if you do this sometimes you'll get a list of profiles instead of the actual person, to remove this in the search bar and the text -profiles. The - excludes results which have the specified word in the url. Also if you know a boutique in your area and want to know if there are any of your schools alumni in it you can replace linkedin with the boutiques website.
@BTbanker You can probably count the number of alumni currently in IB from my school with the fingers on your hands, and you might not even need to use both of them.
