How to work on the side?

Not legal advice request just discussing a hypothetical situation. Posting on the IB forum cuz Off-topic does not allow for anon posting:

I'm on a visa doing Tech (so I can only have one employer/source of active income in the US) and the situation is not a compliance violation.

Dealflow is very slow these days so a friend in the business services industry (very low-mid market) is asking for my help putting their financial department in order. I don't have much experience doing FP&A or working in that segment but I think it could be a good opportunity for learning eventual entrepreneurship + additional income.

Now the big question: how can I get paid? For the above reasons, Venmo and 1099 are out of the picture. BTC to a self-custody wallet?

I’m pretty sure there’s regulatory laws against working a second job with employer approval. My take on this is you’ve made it to the street. Don’t fuck it up. Just focus on the one job and if you need more work, tell your boss.
