HW (RVA) vs HL (DC)

Currently have an offer for HW in their Richmond office and HL in their ADG group in DC.

I’m not necessarily interested in ADG but heard HL has a strong group. HW would let me have my pick at an industry group and places well into PE.

Having trouble deciding bc pretty sure I want to do PE but not necessarily ADG PE and not sure how HW places into NYC/BOS PE. Interested in the healthcare group at HW too.

Any help would be super helpful regarding the reputation of both firms in terms of exits and top groups. Thanks for the help!

I worked at HW&Co. healthcare group in Richmond and HL ADG sold a company I was on the board of, so I’m pretty familiar with the capabilities of both.

Both will enable you to transition to PE in NYC / Boston. Working in ADG as an analyst will not pigeonhole you into the industry, nor will healthcare. You will be disadvantaged when interviewing against industry bankers for particular industries (such as if you’re trying to do Tech PE and interviewing against tech bankers), but that will not be a significant disadvantage and you will definitely be able to overcome it if you otherwise have a strong profile.

So: choose whichever you’d enjoy more and don’t base it too heavily on the exit opportunities.
