you don't even need to work your way to an MD.

Analsyts and associates are the phones going through resumes, or have the power to tell HR to look at your resumes. MDs don't give a fuck.

This + what solidarity said.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

I'm going to differ here. You did the right thing. The problem is that you could e-mail only one MD. It's a numbers game, so you should have networked with a lot more than one senior banker.

If you can, go straight to the top. Then go lower down the totem pole until you get a response. If MD happens to be in a good mood, he has 1000x more power to help you comparing to an analyst.

I entirely disagree. The MD/Senior Partner card is to be used when you have an actual relationship you can lever with them or have an alternative direct means of access, such as someone else at a similarly high enough level within in the firm who can vouch for you. Never go right for the top and expect an immediate response.
