IB internship for 2020 summer for 2022 graduating class

I just finished my freshman year at a non target state school. Although it’s not impossible for students to end up in the IB world it’s difficault at my school. I ended my first year with a GPA just under 3.9. I am at the best internship I was offered (it’s difficult for freshman), a Fortune 100 defense company. Was it a good decision taking a corporate finance internship at a large cooperation rather than working for a small 5-10 employee business that is more related to IB? I’m involved in extra curriculars, most notably the treasurer of my fraternity. And I just finished updating my resume to send out to any bank that will hire a sophomore. Is there any chance I can land a IB internship next summer, or is the following summer more likely? What steps should I take to land a IB internship from where I am? If I’m not offered one for next summer do my IB chances drop exponentially?

Agree with this. Freshman summer matters least. The fact that you have something on your resume is good. Next summer try to do a boutique IB internship and with your 3.9 that'll set you up in a good situation.

There's at least one boutique in virtually every decently sized metro area (1MM people), usually more. They all operate on their own schedules, lack HR departments more than maybe 1 person who has multiple roles. Maybe your school does OCR for a few, but the vast majority you're going to have to network your way into. So make a list, contact as many bankers as possible, and try your best.
