IB internship for High Schooler: Advice needed!
Hey everyone,
I’m reaching out to see if anyone can offer some insights on a bit of a unique situation. I’m currently a high school student attending a school for highly gifted teenagers—think lots of nerdy dudes thinking to much of themselves. I’ve developed a strong understanding of 3 Statement Financial Models, DCFs, LBOs, etc and already networked with a couple Associates and MDs. As a high schooler, I’m curious if it’s realistic to think about landing an internship in Investment Banking at this stage.
Here’s where I could use some guidance:
Is it even feasible for someone my age to get an IB internship?
What should I be focusing on now to make this a reality in the near future?
Any tips on how to approach networking or reaching out to potential opportunities? Is cold emailing boutique- and networking into Mid-Sized-Companies the strategy?
How do I position myself to stand out despite my age and experience level?
Would appreciate any advice from those who have navigated this path or have insights into how the world of IB internships operates!
It does happen but it's pretty rare (outside of nepotism) and many people who do this don't start out doing IB internships.
I also have some md acquaintances too. Even though I don’t know financial modeling, it logical to land an ib internship at Rothschild co?
is your dad the MD?
Unless you have a connection with the MD (eg your dad), chances are it’s a no. Regardless investment banking internships in high school are for the most part meaningless for recruiting.
Thanks for the insight! Does that mean you would propose to focus more on getting into a target Uni or do you have other tips on boosting the your chances of getting into IB? Would also love to hear what your experience with finding the right uni was.
i mean ofc as of right now the most important thing is getting into a top school, nothing else really matters before college.
1. you can’t get any relevant internships and any won’t be very helpful
2. no point in networking now
Trying to network this early might help you get a better understanding of the role but it certainly won’t help you find a job and instead makes you sound like a mega hardo. Recruiting (at least for the US) is pretty structured so 6 months before applications is pretty much the absolute earliest you should be reaching out. Focus on getting into the best school you can right now and making yourself as interesting as possible. Seeing that you’re from Germany, it makes the most sense to target mostly European unis. Personally went to a top high school in the US, toured ~10 colleges to get a sense of the different campuses, ended up going to a semi target, and now incoming at a BB in NYC.
Yeah but I started networking in the high school, and now I’m in the gap year. I’ll ask for cold calling to him after get accepted the university. Is it possible to get an internship after finishing the first year of uni?
