IB tier list in the Netherlands

Hi everyone,

I'm going to start my MSc at EUR in Finance & Investments next year. I already did an IB and PE internship (both not in the Netherlands), and I’d like to do another one in IB in the Netherlands during my studies. Does anyone have an IB tier list of the Benelux/Netherlands? I don't know a lot about the Dutch financial sector.

Kind regards,

The BBs/EBs generally do the larger transactions in NL and pay better than the local banks and boutiques. So you could say that they are somewhat more 'prestigious' to work for (hiring is also more selective). But not sure if they are better to work for. Work culture at Dutch companies is most often superior to that at foreign ones (in terms of hours, contact with seniors etc.)

The Big 4's are very active in the Dutch mid-market M&A space and do hire non-Dutch speakers for their teams. They do good deals and provide a good place to learn. So definitely look at those.

The top Dutch bank within M&A is ING. Second I would say Rabobank (especially in the food & agri sector). ABN Amro is actually winding down its corporate finance practice in the upcoming years so something to keep in mind. Also note that NIBC has stopped its M&A practice in NL.

As someone who has worked at a couple of the names mentioned (+ BB), be advised that campus recruitment events are the primary way for the international banks to fill their intern + grad slots. Seeing as you have done a couple of relevant internships, I would sign up for these events (they typically take place in September each year).

Most of what's been said by others seems accurate. Would avoid ABN Amro unless it will be your only option (can always lateral to a better bank). While it's true that international banks typically require fluency in Dutch, there is definitely some leniency (although this varies per bank).
