IBD at a Chinese Bank in HK
What are your thoughts on doing IBD at a Chinese bank (e.g. CCB, ABC, ICBC, Bank of China) in HK? Would this be a good stepping stone to 1) a top10 MBA program, and 2) post-MBA IBD Associate jobs?
Thanks.

Career Resources
As I know CICC and CITIC has IBD division. Are you sure with banks like CCB, ICBC, BoC? I am really doubtful about ABC!
actually BoC has an IB subsidiary called BOC International, which is a powerful palyer in HK market.
just check the league table of HK market.
CITIC, CICC, BOCI all good choices. ICBC - trading is okay. CCB ECM does SOME stuff. ABC ... no
I've just got an offer as a SA at Citic IB division. If I accept the offer, will it be marketable when I interview for FA next year at a BB ? I got a target school and 3.5 GPA.
bump
can we revive this post? really interested in hearing about this
Where can you find the league table of the HK market? Thanks
What do you all think about a corporate banking role at a BB firm, versus a role at CITIC IBD?
How do you all rank up CITIC against the rest of the BB firms?
Depends on a lot of stuff. Are you Chinese/ABC/white american interested in China? Do you want to work in China long term? These are critical questions.
The short answer is, if you want to do banking then do banking at CITIC because CITIC Securities is a legit bank in China. It ranks top 10 in Hong Kong, even higher on the mainland but it's globally unknown. So if you want to work in IBD/PE in China long term, CITIC is a good name to put on your resume but if you are just staying for a few years, go get a job at a BB.
And, sorry I almost forgot about it, language issues. If your mandarin is anywhere less than native, forget about Chinese banks.
^^ It really depend on your long term career goal.
Well I guess it is always ideal to think about doing IBD at a BB firm, but a few pointers:
CITIC could be my best shot at IBD currently. Of course other offers may come up, but this is a good opportunity if considered stand-alone do you think so?
I am fluent in Mandarin (Singaporean), but need to work on my business mandarin for sure though.
My goal is also to learn and be exposed more to China deals - how do you all view the prospect of China investment banking?
CITIC is a fine place to start if you're going to stick in China/HK
