I'm in finance and I sell finance merch. Most of my buyers probably aren't. Thoughts?
Full disclosure upfront: alongside school, I recently started reselling corporate finance gear (banker bags, vests, quarter zips from GS, JPM, Citadel, Apollo, etc.).
Some context on me: I'm currently a PE intern during the school year, spent this past summer in institutional investing at a $50B+ fund, and I'm an incoming MM M&A IB SA. So I see both sides. I know what this gear means to people actually in the industry, and now I'm seeing who buys it.
For the record, I personally wouldn't wear gear from a firm I don't work at. But there's clearly demand for it.
What's surprised me is that my buyers seem to be mostly students, recruits and people who like the look, not people already at these firms.
Genuinely curious what this forum thinks:
•Is wearing a firm's gear when you don't work there harmless, cringe, or something else?
•Does it change if you're a student recruiting for that firm?
•Former employees wearing old firm gear: fair game?
