Incoming college freshman— where to go?

Accepted to Boston University, Northeastern, Bucknell

Edit: I received the Pwc scholarship at Bucknell which guarantees an interview with them sophomore plus mentorship.

Edit #2:accepted to Michigan so this is a moot point!

Waitlisted at NYU and Colgate

Fully aware these aren’t targets, but I’m willing to put in the work to get there.

Looking to join IB— where should I go to have the best shot at breaking in?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Boston University (BU): While BU is not a target school for investment banking, it has seen some success stories. However, students at BU often face challenges breaking into IB due to limited on-campus recruiting from top firms. Networking and internships will be critical if you choose BU.

  2. Northeastern University: Northeastern's co-op program is a significant advantage. It allows students to gain real-world experience at firms like Morgan Stanley, which can boost your chances of breaking into IB. However, Northeastern is also not a target school, and breaking into IB will require leveraging the co-op system effectively and networking aggressively.

  3. Bucknell University: The PwC scholarship is a unique opportunity, offering mentorship and a guaranteed interview. While Bucknell is not a target for IB, the mentorship and connections through PwC could help you build a strong foundation. However, transitioning from PwC to IB might require additional effort, such as networking and possibly lateral moves.

  4. Waitlisted at NYU and Colgate: If you get off the waitlist at NYU, it would be the best option for IB. NYU is a top target school, with strong on-campus recruiting from bulge bracket and elite boutique banks. Colgate, while not a target, has a strong alumni network that could be helpful.

Recommendation:

  • If you remain waitlisted at NYU, Northeastern might offer the best shot due to its co-op program and real-world experience opportunities.
  • If you value mentorship and a structured pathway, Bucknell with the PwC scholarship could be a good choice, but transitioning to IB will require strategic planning.
  • BU would be the least advantageous option for IB among the three, given its limited recruiting presence.

Regardless of your choice, breaking into IB from a non-target school will require: - Maintaining a high GPA. - Securing relevant internships early. - Networking aggressively with alumni and professionals in the industry. - Preparing thoroughly for technical and behavioral interviews.
