How to figure out what group is for you for group placement IB?

Hey everyone,

I’ll make this quick. I have a strong interest in both industrials and RE but have no way of knowing which one I’ll like working in more. I know they are different spaces but I would pose this question to asking Tech vs Healthcare, etc. How did you all decide on a group if you were between two different ones? Going through placement soon, so I thought it would be a good time to ask. What if you’re interested in Real Estate Technology or Construction Technology as well?

I would appreciate any insight into the two groups and how ultimately many of you made a decision between two groups. Was it the people, work, etc? I was thinking of doing an investment banking internship right now in one or the other cause it might make it easier to decide once I’ve already worked in IB but please let me know if working in IB made it easier to then decide what group you liked better.

Real estate investment banking is modelling heavy. Anyone who tells you otherwise or says it’s easy has never worked in real estate ib in their lives. It’s super specific, you spend a ton of time digging through public data to find as much for you can on rent roll assumptions, fair value adjustments, etc. It’s a pain in the ass, and that’s why many people who aren’t passionate about real estate leave.

Industrials on the other hand is a lot easier from a modelling perspective. If you were a generalist you can go to an industrials IB role, but real estate is def not easy, even people from real estate private equity have a problem with the adjustment.

Out of curiosity, what is your background in? Did you work in both groups? How did you make the decision that REIB was the group you wanted to be in?

I didn’t want to be in real estate investment banking, I just wanted to break into a larger shop and get more experience. I didn’t really care for real estate I just wanted to be in investment banking, in hindsight it was a stupid decision because I was laid off along with my group. The best advice I can give you is if you’re interested in investment banking make sure you really like the industry group, don’t just join a group for the sake of doing it because you may not be good enough there. Know yourself and know what you want to do.

Choosing between industrials and real estate? Been there. Dive into what gets you pumped – the daily grind, the team vibe, and where you see yourself growing. Think about snagging an investment banking internship in one or the other to get a taste.

When I was in your shoes, IB gave me a sneak peek, helping me figure out the deal structures and client interactions I vibed with. Chat up pros in both areas, including those rocking it in Real Estate Tech or Construction Tech, to get the lowdown.

In the end, it's a mix of what clicks for you – the work, the team, and where you see the future. Good luck rocking those placement decisions!
