Industry M&A to IB M&A/PE?
How does working in M&A for an energy company like Shell or BP compare with an IB?
Right now there are very few M&A jobs in banking so could you realistically work in M&A in insudtry for say 5 years then get a job in banking or PE? How favourable is the experience looked upon?
PE shops generally hire ex-bankers, PE guys from other shops or industry professionals. Having a background in a specific sector will make you a viable candiate for a PE shop that focuses on that sector. Unfortunately, it may also limit you to that particular sector. A jump from IB to PE is generally much easier than a jump from corp fin/industry M&A. A lot of the industry professionals are hired into senior level positions within PE shops and come with a tremendous amount of experience and industry knowledge (i.e. 5-10 years min).
