Insight Partners or Top BB/EB?

Just received an offer from a top bb/eb. I know long term my goal is tech investing in most likely the venture/growth stage although I’m open to tech buyout as well. I want to see if I can use my offer to accelerate insight but I’m curious how people in this forum view insight in terms of comp, prestige, exits, etc. Hoping someone at the firm can comment on current analyst comp. Is insight one of the best firms out there and I should try to accelerate no doubt or would it be smarter to do on cycle and get something much better? Any help would be really great

Depends on if you’re sure/confident that you can land in a tech/TMT group at the EB/BB. Insight will open lots of doors in VC and GE but buyouts a little tougher because there’s no modeling on the analyst level – a lot of sourcing instead. Again, a really great skill to have, as most of both GE/VC is sourcing, even at huge firms like TA. If you’re 1000% sure you want to do tech investing and are leaning more early stage, I would say take insight. Else, take the BB/EB

The advice I got from upperclassmen is that you should always take banking over buyside unless it’s a crazy offer (mf PE type) just for brand at the start of your career. Is insight good enough brand/prestige where I have a career safety net? Also, networked with a few analysts who mentioned there is modeling in an 1 and 2 and lots of career mobility at the firm so you can stay to ass and beyond where you model a lot. I’ve also seen consultants go to MF PE ( no modeling) so I’m wondering if insight could get there too

It’s definitely not impossible but it’s an uphill battle for sure. Banking vs Consulting associates are really 10 to 1 and often especially during ASO1 the banking associates are staffed much more often because they can hit the ground running whereas their consulting peers need to catch up to speed. But on the other hand I think Insight might be the most “prestigious” growth firm along with GA and TA so you really can’t go wrong. Great problem to have and if you try for VC/GE out of banking at a top EB/BB tech group you’ll be more than fine.

Insight has had a really rough run the last 3-4 years. Overdeployed at the peak of the bubble and has been struggling to raise their subsequent fund -- will obviously close on some money given the historic track, but will be materially down from previous funds. I'm sure they learned some lessons from it, but I don't think it's the sure bet for starting in tech that it was in 2020 (or better yet, 2015)

So you think it’d worth taking one of pwp/laz/Evercore over insight If long term goal is tech investint? I was under the impression that insight was the best brand name for growth and was by far a better opportunity than pretty much any bank so rly curious to hear opinions. I have a little time to try to accelerate so would love to hear thoughts

Generally speaking, I'd rather hire somebody with a skillset that I can train to my investment logic versus having to re-train somebody who has been immersed in a different investment logic. There are some very good people there (mostly on the buyouts / infra teams) and they may well turn it around -- and I hope they do because the NYC growth ecosystem as a whole benefits from it -- but they made some really questionable choices the past few years.
