Interesting Networking Situation

I know this former MD at bulge bracket for S&T, but the thing is that he claims that he can't do anything to help me with regards to getting an interview for IBD. If an MD for S&T forwarded my resume to HR, would that carry significant weight toward getting an interview, even if he worked in a division separate from what I'm aiming for? If so, how do I approach asking him to forward my resume & cover letter to HR without sounding overly aggressive?

I'd prefer not to openly say which BB this is, but I can private message you to discuss in further detail.

I agree with the above posts, but I want to add something. He doesn't necessarily not like you....but he just doesn't want to do this for you. (someone he barely knows)

He may have some loose connections in the IBD but it would be a hassle for him to do anything meaningful for you. You don't want to go around soliciting hassles. So you can say, "well, let me know if that changes". He might then unexpectedly have a meeting with an IBD guy and say "you know what, I'm going to help this kid out" (mainly because it's much easier than he had expected) and then tell this guy about you and the guy then tells him to have you forward your resume to him.

Networking is statistics.

Never shut doors. Leave them open. Hassling someone is shutting the door. Helping people/introducing yourself is opening doors, and plant seeds. Not every seed will grow in 2 weeks, some seeds take 20 years before they flower....but boy when they flower, you are happy you planted the seed. Plant seeds and some will yield a crop before others, some will yield nothing, few will yield a negative value though...so virtually no downside.

I want to add a couple more things:

I believe a more appropriate title for this thread would be "Very Common Networking Situation".

Think about it.

Also, he doesn't necessarily have HR or anyone's email on hand....he wouldn't email your resume to an HR person...he would most likely forward or hand your resume to the IBD MD he knows, or to his personal analyst/associate, or to the analyst/associate of the IBD guy he knows. I doubt he is buddies with a separate division's HR staff.

So keep that in mind when you are asking for favors. Are you asking the right favor? Don't ask him to send it to HR...he doesn't know HR...he knows a baller IBD MD...he is not trying to search his computer for the HR lady's email address....give people solutions not problems. Ask him to give directly to the IBD connection or to the analyst...because isn't that what you are really asking him?

I know I made gender generalizations, but not trying to spend more time on this post.
