Wondering if anyone has experience/thoughts on the ability to interview for PE on the east coast while doing WC IB? At a top group (Moelis LA/MS Menlo/GS TMT) my intuition is you could get East Coast interviews, but how would you actually go about doing them? Do you have to make up some sort of excuse in order to travel for a couple days? Seems like the WC PE firms hire a lot of East Coast analysts - how does that work, since I imagine the answers will be correlated?

It's pretty challenging. The majority of WC analysts I knew targeted WC opportunities so it was not an issue for them. But if you are interested in working in a WC office and recruiting on the EC, you would need to be a bit more focused in the places that you choose to interview. One analyst I worked with in a WC office got the go-ahead from his team to work out of the New York office for two weeks while he interviewed with a handful of firms there. He then flew back on ad-hoc basis for any subsequent interviews.
