Investment Banks need to step up

In London.

How the hell do my consultant friends get free breakfast and snacks? Even the ones at Tier 2 shops like OW. It’s not about wanting to eat the food, it’s simply about the gesture and optics. Even their coffee system is better — JPM’s free coffee is absolutely horrid. IBs need to step up their game

Laughs in EB....  Congrats on paying £2.50 for a Diet Coke at MS though!

Almost all of the consultant companies are private companies with a fraction of the number of employees of big banks. They are not micromanaged on margin by the street and retention is way more important to them.

Banks are publicly traded and have hundreds of thousands of employees. Their expenses and margin are heavily scrutinized - look at Citi which has been struggling on margin, the bad publicity and stock performance behind peers is impacting their business. Banks can't only give free perks to one or two divisions - feeding all of those employees would be a major expense.

Tech companies are the same way - they did meals and perks when they were private or during the golden days of being public, but as soon as they actually need to turn a profit or come under margin scrutiny, they pull most of the perks.

I'm all for good coffee, but for a full catered breakfast you've pretty much gotta go to a private company

What about saving a penny to lose a pound? Food would def boost morale and productivity without too much of a cost. And why is it that higher margin segments can’t get special treatment? Isn’t that the same as paying some employees more since their work is more valuable?

I mean I’d take a banking salary over a consulting salary + some free snacks…
