IRM internship at Barclays PLC
Hi I am a freshman and am doing a special study abroad program in London. After studying I will be doing an internship in information risk management. I am a fiance major and am interested in pursuing IBD in the future, however am more interested in equity research and the stock market.
Here is the description of my placement.
IRM takes a business-focussed view of information assets held by the Bank, whether they are held in electronic or other forms. It aims to integrate people, processes and technology through use of risk management principles to safeguard the integrity, availability and confidentiality of information in accordance with the Bank‚s operating model and risk appetite. This is achieved either directly or through partnerships with related disciplines, e.g. Business Unit information risk and security teams, Legal & Compliance, Risk etc.
Few questions
-
What does this mean based on the info. given? Will I be evaluating the risk of trades made?

As is understand it this is a middle office job, not back office like operations, and looks good for a freshman and great on paper. Also abroad so even better. Could I network in Britain and if I show I can work hard try to continue working with them in the US? What is the difference between Barclays PLc and Barclays Wealth and BarCap?

My most important question, I have an interview with the company that will solidify my internship. How should I prepare for this? I have no knowledge of risk, but should I talk about Barclays as a bank, my goals, and what I hope to gain?
anyone please advise. I am interested in sales and trading. I have been placed in this internship. I don't know if this is good? or what it really entails, I know you are all knowledgeable can someone please answer any or all of the questions Please
What kind of SA stints can you land as a fiancee major?
Well I am a freshman, at this point I know I am interested in trading, the stock market, investing etc. I have an internship in risk management at barclays. I don't know what this is or what it means, just that it is middle office right?I don't know what I should be looking for at this point. It is only 6 weeks, but will be a great experience another person in the group is doing JP Morgan ops, which is probably not as good as irm at barclays right?
anybody???
Based upon the description provided, this seems like an IT-related role. Banks and other firms need to safeguard databases and other systems from theft or destruction. These teams assess risks to "information assets", which include potential intrusion on firm systems from hackers, destruction of the physical servers, even leaks of information from employees. These teams also implement solutions for current problems, and develop Business Continuity Plans to safeguard firm information in the event a threat is actualized.
This probably won't help too much with trading, although the Barclay's name is good, starting early is good, and the potential to network with others in the firm is certainly possible (do this carefully. target individuals using the firm's directory to find people who might be from your school or who have some sort of connection; the last thing you want is to hear from HR that you were using the directory to pester people).
Also, don't worry if this gig is "better than" your friend at JPM Ops. Its good to take an early interest in wall street but you'll learn if you spend time on this forum or meeting people in the industry that this sort of attitude might not be acceptable.
