Irrational Behavior, Idoine= Gold

In the wake of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan, it is amazing to observe the irrational behavior among the general public, both foreign and domestic

Iodized salt is apparently the new hot commodity in China, driven by the misconception that it somehow "protects" against radiation

It is important to note that there is no elevated radiation detected in China and one needs to swallow a LARGE (deadly) amount of iodized salt for it to have any effect

There is also the unjustified concern that the ocean water near Japan is affected and thus the salt supply will be disrupted. Again, there is absolutely no evidence to support this either.

Here in the U.S. iodine pills are selling like crazy as well. Again, the effects on the US are theoretical in nature. I can't believe people in Arkansas are buying iodine pills as well, considering Arkansas is a loooooong way from Japan.

If you lived through and saw the Czarnobyl cloud and were given iodine only after the cloud passed and hit Sweden when the world found out what had occurred you would be paranoid also. A good number of my friends from the region born around 86 have died of cancer before they turned 18, others have other health problems. I myself was 2 and bacame ill around the time of exposure. Still remember seeing strange dark "rain" clouds pass over where i lived 1000km north of Czarnobyl.
