Is every question a sell-point?

Just wondering if during interviews, every single question should be a sell point. Meaning you're just sitting down small chatting and you talk about your basketball hobby or something (is there a need to try to sell yourself on that topic).

Does trying to sell every get overdone?

You have to realize that yes, every question is a selling point.

But that doesn't mean that you have to sell yourself on every question. In fact, if you do, the interviewer will most likely think you're a douche.

The biggest point is to just make friends with your interviewer. If he asks you about football, talk about football. This is not a time to try to interject how great you are. If you can talk like a normal human being, you are selling yourself. Personality is a big selling point in investment banking.

So, you may be selling yourself, but you'd better not always be trying...

- Capt K - "Prestige is like a powerful magnet that warps even your beliefs about what you enjoy. If you want to make ambitious people waste their time on errands, bait the hook with prestige." - Paul Graham

Once you step into the interview room you are being evaluated, period.  In this case, they want to see whether or not you have outside interests and social skills.  Also, they use these chats to make sure you aren't misrepresenting yourself on your resume. People w/o well-balanced social lives are at a high risk of burning in flames on the job, which, of course, employers don't want.  No need to actively tout your jumper, but make sure that you get the point across that you are a well-balanced person.  Everything you say must enhance your candidacy.

The best thing is to show a genuine interest AND/OR accomplishment through everything on your resume. If bball is a hobby, show passion (which is fine), if your the next Lebron (unlikely), show some type of accomplishment that demonstrates hardwork/leadership/any kinda of bs.
