Is Geography considered a fluffy major

I am aiming for Bsc Geography w Econ at LSE right now, just wanted to know the general opinion, is Geography considered a fluffy easy major? Will I be at a disadvantage during MBB/IB internships? Is Bsc Acturial Science more advantageous?

Disagree, prob at a slight advantage if anything not having done econ or finance as most banks nowadays are looking for non econ/finance grads particularly in stem. Truth is if you’re at a target uni which OP is then it doesn’t matter. You could study bricklaying at Oxford (if they offered it) and still have an advantage over someone studying econ at a semi/non target - this is even more the case for MBB where targets especially oxbridge matter a lot

I think it does matter, a little - but not enough to hinder you. I agree re. banks not liking finance/business kids, but econ is still well respected and IMO an econ/STEM kid will always win out versus history, geography, classics etc., ceteris paribus.

I agree that it's not a deal breaker by any means, and that whether you attended a target or not is more important, but do you not think - everything else being equal - that the LSE Econ kid is going to be more competitive than the LSE Geography kid? I'd also maintain that maths at Warwick (but not a semi-target) would be preferred to history at Oxbridge. And I also think you see this in the way that targets work - you get lots of kids doing irrelevant/non-quant subjects from Oxbridge, but much fewer from LSE, and even fewer from Warwick and UCL. Ignoring Imperial as it's all STEM.

Also agree for MBB that if anything novelty can be an advantage, but that's different.

No. They do not care 1 bit. If they're letting in kids who do IR/eastern studies from UCL and history from warwick then they'll let a geographer in from LSE lol. Would argue you have a slight advantage if  you can spin the degree to positively stand out from the slew of LSE economics students applying. Someone doing a "soft" degree at LSE has interviewed at some top hedge funds in London which is pretty nuts.

Yes, geography is considered to be, as you put it, one of the "fluffier" degrees.

Since you're studying at LSE, you're obviously a bright lad with good A levels so it shouldn't put you at any real disadvantage compared to those who studied finance/Econ.

You will have to study a bit harder when prepping for interviews as the material may not have been part of your undergrad.

Good luck!

geography may be the fluffiest degree ever created...does not mean you can't be recruited for IB. With a high GPA and good internships, you may have no problems.
