Is it acceptable to put Investment Banking Analyst if working in Capital Markets

I'm working in the Cap Mkts Division of a BB. I'm in a group that focuses on energy infrastructure with intense modeling and dealing with a diverse set of financial products (similar to a banking group). Additionally, the group is one of the only in the Cap Mkt groups that consistently places kids into PE funds. Is it acceptable to put Ibanking analyst then if I'm not in the Ibanking division of the bank?

Guessing this is C (or maybe MS?). Just list yourself as your actual title. If it's a good group, everyone who matters will know what it means. What exactly is lying going to accomplish?

I see an increasing number (or maybe I just casually pay more attention to this) of kids on LinkedIn listing Investment Banking at xyz but they are actually in DCM/ECM for example. I don't really see the point of this for 3 reasons: 1. there is no need to be ashamed to be in capital markets although arguably less glamorous than M&A (you are still part of a limited number of people who made it to IBD) 2. if some HHs contact you believing you are in M&A, they will ask you in what group you are and when they realise you are not they will lose interest anyway. 3. you are actually missing out on potential opportunities suitable to people with a capital markets background

I agree with finbrah

Capital Markets groups are part of Investment Banking divisions at plenty of places.

I take you are in a ECM, DCM, LF, private placement or securitized product origination group.

If you write something like "Analyst (Equity Capital Markets Group)" or "Analyst, ECM" as your title on your resume that should be clear to anyone who understands the industry or has half a brain. You don't need to write "investment banking" anywhere.

Be that as it may, in interviews I would suggest you note when describing you job that you owned the model etc.. or whatever "banking" responsibilities you had in that role.

The reason I say that is because the allocation of responsibilities between capital markets , M&A and industry coverage teams can vary a lot between banks and you want to make sure you're getting credit in the interviewers perspective for what you did.

Hope that helps.

All depends on where you work.

If you are at a firm that puts CM in IBD (e.g. GS), then the correct title is Investment Banking Analyst (or Associate or whatever) - it's not lying or stretching the truth, just the literal fact of the matter.

If you are at a firm that buckets CM separately (e.g. MS with GCM), then Investment Banking Analyst would just be incorrect.
