Is it cool to ask your contact this?
So guys say ure talking to this banker for the first time, and then once ur ending ur convo, is it cool to ask him/her if he/she can put u in touch with the recruiter, or 'how can i position myself better for an interview with the firm'? both refer to the same thing, but its just that with the second mini-ask, ur not sure whether ur contact would be able to have any say in the recruiting process for the SA position. what do u guys think about it? would be good to get ppls input on this.
If applicable, say you think it's a cool bank to work for and ask them how the recruiting process works. That's probably the best way to approach it- don't ask for any special favors; the contact will know to help you if that's what he wants to do.
It's really not a big deal. Stop obsessing.
Also say u email em twice for the recruiters contact, and they never get back to u. is it cool just to call them and make the ask?
Wanna know this too. I emailed my contact twice to ask about what they like about their firm and general interview tips, but they didn't reply (yeah I know my questions are sort of trivial lol). I don't know if they're just too busy or they ignore it, but they were great when we met and told me to email them questions whenever. Is calling them directly bad in this case?
Agreed.
Also, just so you know... you don't want a leg up in HR and pushed to the bankers... you want a leg up with the bankers and pushed to HR. I.e. HR sends your resume to the the senior in the person coordinating recruiting and says, you may want to consider this guys... vs. the banker e-mailing your info to HR saying "we want to consider this guy"
LIke Illini mentioned, ask him about how recruiting works at his firm, maybe what types of qualities/attributes they look for in a candidate, if there's any advice he can give you on how to get a leg up or make yourself a more attractive candidate, how did you end up here, etc... Its also very helpful to ask for additional recommendations to people you can talk to... if hes a senior guy, maybe ask for a referral to a junior guy who would be willing to share a few minutes to tell you about his experiences so can get a better idea of what its like at a junior level.
yeah id like to know this too, if its bad calling em directly..i guess what i would do, is if they dont respond to ur email, give em 2 weeks, and then just hit them with the call..but again, im not a fucking networking ninja. haha
In my tenuous experience I'd say it depends on the person. Last week I had an informational interview on the phone with an MD who is an alumnus, went well so I asked him near the end point blank " How can I best position my self for a career in Ibanking" then "How can I best position my self for an internship at XX bank" . When I asked the latter he told me to send my resume over come recruiting time. However, others did not like that approach. In fact, one person was offended by my directness.
1.It's OK, it just be careful how you phrase the question. Do not make it direct, about his bank or your application. More along the lines of, Thanks for taking the time to talk to me, it has been very informative. Do have any recommendations for someone like myself trying to get into banking O Do you have any recommendations for the recruiting process I think I'm going to apply this fall. That will give him the choice of being general in his answer or going out of his way to help you. It will make the situation less awkward and you appear more professional.
Yea I think if emailing contacts twice to ask about resume referral and they still don't get back, that means they aren't interested in helping. But if emails were just about general questions like the firm's culture, the interview tips and they don't get back, should I assume that it's probably better to give up on the contact? This is weird b/c people told me to email questions anytime and when I email they don't reply haha. But then again, those are in really higher-up positions, so I really don't know if they have time to respond.
A lot of time people say stuff like email me with questions to be polite, not because they genuinely want to take the time to answer your questions.
Should ask them for a phone call, I learned that people are more inclined to talk to you rather than type paragraphs..
