Is it easier to lateral as an analyst or as an associate to NYC from west coast boutique?

I’m currently a late 2nd year analyst at a boutique shop on the west coast. I want to make it to NYC, but I would like some advice about when to make the leap. I’m currently on track for an A2A promote by the end of the year, so would it be easier to lateral as a senior analyst or as a 1st year associate? I’m looking for EB/BB. Any advice or relevant experience would be helpful. Looking to stay in IB>PE as well if that helps. Do I need to network with the teams to even get a shot?
