Is there a reason a headhunter would ask for confidentiality?

A few years ago I had an interview to a BB associate position; I got the position but I balked because the pay and prospects weren't up to par (suffice to say I had a dearth of knowledge about specific departments and educational requirements).

But I remember the headhunter who gave me the interview opportunity to keep the hiring process secret; I never broached anything specific (i.e. the specific interview contents et cetera) but I did tell my family members, a few of my friends, and over a year after the hire was finished, online anonymously (for short bursts of time).

My question is, are there any particular reasons this could be asked?

Because the headhunter is a shark and most likely isn't even retained by that bank. They fish around for some candidates, approach the bank claiming to have interviewees at the ready, and hope the bank agrees to pay them a fee. All the legitimate headhunters, at least in my experience, are happy to have their positions shared. We did this all the time when I was in IB and one analyst didn't get a position emailed to him/her.
