Why do good people do nothing?

We also saw the numerous allegations which were alarming to say the least, if there is even a shred of truth to them.

Even more inexcusable was senior management’s response. The vehement and aggressive public attacks against the victims and strong handed attempts to squash a sort of investigation are obviously completely unacceptable in this day and age. 

The question is, why have so many employees stood by and done nothing? I’m sure there are plenty of great people at Jefferies who don’t want to work in this type of environment.

Id be curious to hear from those still at Jefferies why so many people stayed? 

Is it a function of not really having better options? the lateral market obviously isn’t great and Jefferies has always had a reputation of being bottom feeders.

or is it a culture issue? Those willing to work at Jefferies to begin with don’t care about protecting their colleagues?

Or do people actually believe there isn’t a shred of truth to the allegations?

would be really curious to hear different perspectives

Were the victims attacked / shamed? I live under a rock and don't pay attention, that would be absolutely inexcusable. 

Honestly, it's probably nobody wanting to stick their neck out. Especially in this environment where any of us could be out on the street in the next round of cuts. Not saying its good or bad, just self-interest. The whole situation is pretty shameful.

A. The majority of people don't work in that environment. My group is close knit, and care for eachother. Seniors push for everyone to succeed in anything they want, including if they might want to recruit for PE. When people tell you that Jefferies is group dependent I don't think you truly know how accurate it is. I know that if my MD's left the firm (similar to pretty much every other firm), we all would leave with them. We have very little exposure to those two MD's, and the people I have interacted with have only wanted what is best for me.  

B. Discrimination on the rest of the street is just as bad. Seriously, you think the MD's at BB's and EB's who are 60 years old, reek of white privilege, and only get drinks with "the boys" are any better? The only difference is that these two morons were more vocal instead of passive microaggressions and people weren't willing to take that shit. I implore you to find 5-10 Women MD's that are at any major firms in IBD. Not to mention even here in WSO, you complain about all of this but have you seen the general type of people? Consistently shitting on diversity and women, I wonder how many people are actually trying to make a stand or are just using this as an attempt to shit on the company. Its still here, even with the newer generations.  

C. I was the kid who never got too many things given to me. I worked my ass off to get to a random nontarget because I was so ridiculously far behind from going to shit public schools to the economic conditions that surround me. Jefferies took me, appreciated my work ethic, and I feel some type of loyalty for that, even though I'm considering leaving for PE because I know even if I leave my seniors understand and shit one even vouched for me during oncycle. 

D. When I tell you we're growing, we're growing. Fast. Even though markets have been shit I haven't found myself sitting on my ass at all, and the deal volume we're taking in is still ridiculous. We're phenomenal in tech, industrials, lev fin, we practically dominate Charlotte's M&A, we expanded to Chicago, and RX is top 10 on the street. Not to mention having a top Healthcare and PCA group on the street. (Though from what I hear Healthcare is harsh, but hey we fired Sage Kelly even though he was a rain maker).

E. Yes, also lateral markets are shit. If I lateraled to Goldman I would've been fired, if I went to CS I would've been fired, if I went to Greenhill I would have been fired, DB/UBS are shrinking their IB platforms and no one is hiring. 

Does this mean I condone what happened in NY's M&A division? God no. Those two should have been fired and its sickening to think that they got off Scott free. But analysts had the balls to do something about it. I wonder how many other firms just kept everything under wraps. What handler is doing with the purposeful 50/50 split of Men & Women in their generalist summer analyst program ( which lead to full time analyst roles) is going to create more and more conflict between geriatrics and the newer generations. The shit on Jefferies is Survivor's bias. I want to know how many planes never got back with the bullet holes to be analyzed across the industry. All I know is that if I leave Jefferies, or when, I know that I will face the same type of shit anywhere in the industry. (I've had internships in PE, HF, IB, its all the same type of people.).
