Joining diversity groups - thoughts?

I will be interning at a top bulge bracket this summer. What are people's thoughts on joining diversity groups for women, lgbt, etc? How useful are they/can they be detrimental? I am particularly curious about the lgbt one.

The company I worked for last year was rather conservative - there was a stigma against those who were open about their sexuality. I don't want to run into any similar problems this summer, but also don't want to wall myself off from potential opportunities...

Do it. There's definitely upside to you personally.

More people are open to lbg (probably not 't', to be frank) than ever before and most people couldn't really give a shit who you're banging if you do a good job. The least likely for that to be true of is over 50 y/o straight males (not surprising, I guess).

I work at a firm with a relatively high percentage of openly gay colleagues and even middle-aged guys who I would consider jockish or bro-ey are more open than you would guess by meeting them.

I'm assuming you're in New York or CA. If not, I have no idea if the above holds true or not. Good luck.
