JP Morgan Chase - Commodities Analyst ?

curious as to what the commodities analyst in JP Morgan Chase would do?

I always thought Chase was basically the division related to the debit cards the JPM was offering - but an acquaintance has this role on their Facebook as a commodities analyst and he is based in Calgary in Alberta.

Now is this basically Investment Banking analyst and doing the same stuff, and he's just assigned to an industry group?

Yeah, the poster above is spot on.

JPM bought out Bear Stern's physical commodity business when they went bankrupt and recently bough the RBS Sempra commodity business as well - they have a few offices around. In the US, the commodities group is divided between Houston (Power, Coal, Natural Gas) and Calgary (Oil mostly).

So JPM Commodities is basically S&T work for the most part (some areas are kind of IB/PE though), but the program is split away from JPM's S&T division.

They have commodities offices in Calgary, Stamford, Houston, and NY.
