JPM networking event

I got an email saying I was selected to go to Houston for a JPM networking event but that’s a 2 hr drive and I’m not sure if it’s worth the time. I’ve been to a networking event before and I feel like I’m just lost in the crowd and none of them will actually remember my name.

Does this mean anything?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, attending a JPM networking event, even if it requires a 2-hour drive, can be valuable if approached strategically. While it's true that large events can make it challenging to stand out, there are ways to ensure your time is well spent:

  1. Follow Up is Key: The real value of networking events often comes after the event. Make sure to follow up with the people you meet. Send personalized emails or LinkedIn messages referencing your conversation to solidify the connection.

  2. Be Memorable: Avoid generic questions like "What's the culture like?" Instead, ask thoughtful, specific questions that show genuine interest in their work or the firm. For example, inquire about a recent deal or initiative the firm has been involved in.

  3. Quality Over Quantity: Focus on having meaningful conversations with a few individuals rather than trying to meet everyone. This makes it easier for them to remember you.

  4. Preparation: Research the attendees or speakers beforehand if possible. Knowing who will be there allows you to target key individuals and tailor your questions.

  5. Be Authentic: Show genuine interest in finance and the firm, but also let your personality shine. People remember those who are authentic and engaging.

Even if you feel lost in the crowd, attending the event can still be beneficial. Networking is a long-term game, and you never know when a connection might pay off. Plus, being present at a selective event like this could get your name flagged to HR, as mentioned in previous WSO threads. If you can make the trip, it’s worth considering.
