If you want to do equity research and it be at a hf this is your shot. Take it. When you leave current shop tell them this and tell them how thankful you are for the opportunity they gave you and how much you learned and to be in touch. Ignore the pay thing.
At new shop work hard, be helpful and nice to all and network within bank with other banks and clients. Make them WANT to keep you and if they can't, to help you out at the end of the stint. Eg. they should tell their contacts and friends "We love the kid we just can't get headcount from up top. You should take him on or talk to him"
Good luck
I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.
This is their way of trying you out without having to fire you. If you suck or deal flow slows, then it's easy for them to cut you loose. If this job gets you closer to your desired career path then go for it and work your ass off

Did they comment on likelihood of extending contract after 6 months at all?
Pour yourself a drink and cross that bridge when it comes... You're welcome.
I'd take it.
