I would reply with something from the interview. If you talked about something that wasn't related to IB, say biking, tell him you really enjoyed learning that he was into biking. Note this works best if it was something you had in common with him. That way he knows you would be an interesting person to have around the office. The last thing the MD wants esp at a smaller bank is to have a SA with no personality.
I am worried that it may seem a bit too obvious/fake if I mention something unrelated to the internship though at this point. Since the conversation, we have already exchanged two emails, both in which I really thanked him and told him I really enjoyed/appreciated chatting with him. The second email I really emphasized my interest in the internship and learning about IB, so it would seem strange to go away for the next email. Anyways though, thanks for the advice, I agree I don't want to come across as boring, but I am hoping he has formed a good opinion of my personality through our lengthy conversation.
Okay, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were looking for a way to open a 1st email. If you have all ready sent 2 emails just let it run its course. You are only a sophmore, its not the end of the world if you dont get a IBD internship this summer.
Don't press the issue too much... you're a sophomore and it isn't the end of the world if you don't get the internship this summer. Follow up, but don't expect that you are going to sway him one way or the other. He has been seemingly gracious with his time, and the last thing you want to do is pressure him and regrettably damage a potentially useful bridge for the future.
