Lateral from corp dev to IB
I am working in the corp dev team at a renewable energy company since 2.5 years. Was in Big 4 advisory for 2 years prior to that.
I have worked on 4 M&A deals and currently working on a fund raise. Lately I am not enjoying the work as much because of the slow pace and my plateauing learning. Been thinking of moving to IB since it seems a lot more interesting with much higher comp.
I have good rapport with the team at the mid market IB we work with and wanted to get some opinions if it will be appropriate to approach them for a switch. I like the team and they seem to have decent WLB by IB standards.
Also, can I expect to join as an Associate or will have to start as an analyst.
Sounds like a good idea, why not reach out to people in the mid market shop to start a conversation as well as various similar shops that do renewables - would there be any reason not to network and learn more if you’d be interested in moving to ib?
Yeah people say networking is highly important and it’s good you’re already familiar and work well with the people in the places you want to join - you get to understand the group more and see if it’d be a good fit for your goals.
I work at a boutique and have seen a lot of analysts in my group over the years join the pe firm that they worked with on a deal they did. People seem to either reach out to the the other team directly or get a referral from the MD they worked with on that deal. If you’re already familiar with the people on the other teams, they should be open to chatting about opportunities
I have good rapport with the MD there. Should I reach out to him directly or go through the AVP? My only concern is that my department lead has a solid rapport with those guys as well. So does it make more sense to speak to him prior to reaching out? If I don't end up joining the bank, it could end up messing up my current job which would not be great in this environment.
Following up on this, any outcome?
I've seen people over the years switching from CD to IB in bespoke sectors, such as Renewables / Utilities / RE. Would be much tougher for vanilla sectors. For starters, you should definitely test the waters with the MM guys you've worked with and also connect with HH too.
