Lateral from product to coverage group?

I am wondering if it is wise to try and lateral from ECM to a consumer/retail coverage group (assuming my hours would be much worse) if my goal is to try and work for a consumer focused PE shop/VC firm without having to do MBA. It seems highly unlikely I would be able to make the jump from my current seat and MBA is two years and then still have to recruit for PE/VC firm. Wondering what paths you have seen people take to get into those type of seats, as from looking at Linkedin it seems most have started in the coverage group as an analyst, I however am an associate.
