Lateral Hire - Should you send your resume to HR?

Hi guys,

I am looking for a lateral hire into one of the elite boutiques. On most company's website, it stated please send your resume to this email (the company's HR email address) I wanted to check with fellow monkeys here whether its a good idea to email your resume or is it better to go through the headhunter path?

My only concern if the boutique's HR starts following up with my BB's HR about me and checking up on my performance / current working status etc when I have publicly not disclosed any plans of leaving my current firm. Thanks a ton guys!
