Leaving Big4 Valuation for IB internship
Hi all.
I’m currently half a year into Valuation practice job at one of the Big4 (it’s my first job right after graduation).
I do learn and evolve a lot at my job (the whole package- DCFs, Multiples, OPMs, market research, Excel, PPT etc.)
I’ve been told it’s best not to leave before I mark at least one year into that job, however an interesting opportunity came up as an intern in one the elite boutiques. I do have to go through the whole process so it’s not like I’m saying yes and I’m in, but I just wanted to hear your general opinion about leaving a full time job (which I’m just starting to understand and wrap my head around, and is also relevant to the IB world which is the career I’m pursuing), in favor of a 9 month internship within the actual job I’m aiming for, even though it might feel I’m going backwards in my career progress.
Happy to hear your thoughts!
Thanks.
P.s at the moment, I don’t care about the $, I’m genuinely want to professionally evolve as much as possible
Bump
If you don’t care about money and it’s an EB like (MoCo, EVR, Lazard, PWP, PJT or CVP) then it would be smartest to go there.
Is this the Evercore Advisory Research program?
Think LAZ/HL/RTH/PWP
what do you want to do, where do you see yourself in 5/10 years? Leaving a job that early isn't necessary that bad, happens more than you think, sometimes jobs don't always workout or you get a call back from another job where the hire didn't work out.
I’m just asking myself if leaving a job after half a year just when I start understanding what’s going on, is the right timing.
Maybe my chances of getting into IB after a full year at what I’m doing will increase?
I’m asking mainly about the timing.
Valuation is still very relevant to IB. Maybe more technical and less transaction related.
Maybe it’s better to go for it when I’m more “prepared”? As half a year experience might not make the difference between a non-experience candidate, whereas if I come with a whole year experience then it becomes a no-brainer between me and other non experience candidates?
Honestly you have to look at this as a career restart. They won't see you as more "prepared" no matter how long you worked so your just giving up a good opportunity to restart into the career you want.
Depending on which Big4 firm it is, maybe it’s worth looking into whether you’re able to take a three month sabbatical this early in your tenure. I know people that exercised that option, spent that sabbatical interning at other companies, or building their own side businesses, and then just quit once they’re sabbatical ended.
In your case, if your internship is only for the summer, but any resulting offer would contemplate a start date the following calendar year, you could basically return from sabbatical, continue working at the Big4 firm until closer to your start date, and then quit later on. Feels like the best of all worlds: get your internship at the EB, lock down an offer but continue to build experience at your valuations firm, and collect a paycheck until your official EB start date.
It’s a 9 month internship (the bank is Roth.)
And I’m currently at Deloitte, and that suggestion to “temporarily leave” is not an option
